Happy New Year (& County Commissioner)!
Girlguiding Wirral welcomes Greer McDonald as its new County Commissioner!
What’s your earliest guiding memory?
My earliest guiding memory is being in the Pixie six in Brownies at 9th Heswall Brownies with Mrs McFarland.
How did you become a volunteer?
My mum told me she had seen a request for help at my old Guide Unit in the church magazine and suggested that I might like to contact them. I was very nervous as I was only 21 but I did ring Mrs Brown and the rest is history as they say…
What sections do you run?
I currently run Rainbows and Guides Units but I have run Brownies in Tenerife when I lived there.
What’s your favourite campfire song?
My favourite campfire song is Barges which was taught to me by a fellow Guider Suzie McLellan and its stuck with me as an all time favourite.
What opportunities has guiding given you?
So many it would be hard to mention them all, but the ones that stick out in my mind are taking a group of girls to Norway, leaders camp in the Rockies in Canada and of course the opportunity to meet lots of new people.
What’s guiding great at?
Helping develop the girls at whatever age with confidence, self esteem, decision making and the knowledge they need as girls in this ever changing world.
What would you say to others thinking about volunteering with Guiding?
Just try it – the positive influence you can make to the lives of young girls is amazing and I know from my own experiences that you never forget your leaders.
What are you most looking forward to in your new County Commissioner role?
I am looking forward to playing a wider and varied role in Girlguiding Wirral and learning from my peers in many ways. Nothing is more rewarding than helping the girls advance in their lives and being able to watch, learn and follow other guiders at close quarters is also so exciting.
Happy New Year!
