18th Birkenhead North Brownies & Bellway Homes

International Women’s Day 2017

A group of girls from 18th Birkenhead North Brownies have marked International Women’s Day with an inspirational visit to a new residential development on the Wirral to see an award-winning female construction manager at work.

As part of the worldwide celebrations, the Brownies visited Bellway Homes’ Mallory Park development on Ingleborough Road in Prenton to meet site manager Jessica Licence and hear how the high achieving 30-year-old is carving an interesting career for herself in the traditionally male dominated construction industry.

In line with this year’s ‘Be Bold for Change’ theme, the girls were given a tour of the building site and learnt more about Jessica’s role as the manager of a busy development and professional construction team of up to 30 men.

They had the chance to ask lots of questions about Jessica’s career history to date and how she feels about managing an all-male team.

Always happy to champion the role of women in construction, Jessica has worked in the industry for 12 years and was the first female site manager in the North West to receive the prestigious ‘Pride in the Job’ award in more than seven years.

She was very happy to facilitate the visit, commenting: “It was an absolute pleasure to welcome the girls to site and dispel some of the myths about women working in this industry.

“I absolutely love my job, and team that I work with, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the construction industry to any young woman looking for a fast-paced and exciting career with great prospects.”

Siobhan Thorne, the group’s leader, added: “Meeting Jessica has been a fantastic opportunity for the girls and I know that they have come away with a different perspective about women’s roles in the building industry.

“I used to work in the construction industry myself, times have changed, but the visit brought back great memories and was the perfect opportunity to highlight some of the different roles that women can go for.”

Located in Prenton, Mallory Park is an attractive new residential development of three and four bedroom homes that enjoys a pleasant location close to attractive public parks, good commuter links and useful shops, services and other essential amenities.
